The irony is in the fact that a disciple is, by definition, a "follower." The people were following Him, but they weren't really "following" Him. Jesus tells them (and us) that unless one is willing to give up everything, he cannot be Christ's disciple. Just because one is a part of the crowd does not mean that one is automatically a part of the core. Discipleship is serious business.

He often does that by leading us "through the valley."
